 2024 Black History Theme: African Americans and the Arts

This theme is infused with African, Caribbean, and Black American lived experiences. (ASALH)

The International Black History Quiz Bowl (IBHQB) became an Internationally recognized program of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. at the 83rd Grand Conclave in Charlotte, NC.

Districts are not required to have a district competition, however registering four (4) youth, no less than three (3) from the district is encouraged. There is no gender requirement, however, participants must be at least a rising ninth grader and at most a rising twelfth grader.

PURPOSE

Educate students about the rich history of Black culture, as well as, to motivate them to learn more about Black history and Black culture.

TYPES of Competition

Face-to-face (in-person), Virtual, and/or Hybrid Districts have the autonomy to coordinate their competitions and use a variety of response platforms for their local, state or district competitions. Response platforms like Quizzizz, pollev, or buzzer systems are pretty popular.

RECOGNITION IDEAS

Each student competing will receive a certificate of participation and a commemorative item. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams will receive monetary awards. In addition, the winning team will receive copies of the “Mis-Education of the Negro”, an Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) student membership, and a NAACP Youth and College Division Membership.

International Black History Quiz Bowl Rules and Guidelines

  • Teams should consist of no more than four (4) players and no less than three(3) players.
  • Virtual Platform – Zoom (registration enforced).
  • Response Technology Platform - Point Solutions. (students should have a device to respond (smartphone, tablet, laptop) and will have to sign in through ttpoll.com.
  • Students (the team) should also have a laptop or form of technology to display the questions.

The competition consists of 4 rounds of 10 – 15 questions in each round.

RULES and GUIDELINES

  • Teams should consist of 4 players (no less than three)
  • Virtual Platform – Zoom (registration enforced through platform and or website
  • Response Technology Platform - Dojo360 / Point Solutions
  • Each Player should have their video on during the competition and display their school or organization name.
  • Players should have the virtual Background of their school’s or organization’s logo
  • Monetary Awards will be sent to the sponsoring district/ chapter and the district/chapter will distribute to the winning team

Disclaimer: There may be some questions in the competition that may not be in the STUDY GUIDE

Preliminary Round: “Old Gold” - Each question in this round is worth 100 points and each team has 15 seconds to answer the questions. 10 Questions Intermission: Two minutes for intermission (Display Leader Board).

Round One: “Royal Purple” - Each question in this round is worth 200 points and each team has 15 seconds to answer the questions. 10 Questions Intermission: Two minutes will be used for Sponsor Recognition.

Round Two: “Cardinal Principals” - This is the semi-final round. Each question in this round is worth 300 points and each team will have 10 seconds to answer the questions. 10 Questions Intermission: Five minutes will be used to Recognize History Maker and Our Future.

Final Round: “Omega” – The Buzzer Round. In this round the first team to answer the question within 10 seconds correctly will receive 400 points. 10 Questions

Tie Breaker: In the event of a tie, there will be an additional two questions. 100 points correct answer - 50 points incorrect answer.
